Track 3: Surgical Nursing

Surgical nurse is sometimes called as Operating Room Nurse or Perioperative Nurse or Scrub Nurse or Theatre Nurse providing care to patients before, during and after surgery. Surgical nurses help surgical technicians to prepare and organize the operation room. They will provide pre-procedure instructions to the patient, administer any medications They work alongside surgical teams to make sure that patients are receiving the best possible care. As a Perioperative Nurse, they will help patients with recovery immediately following surgery and teach them, and their families, about at-home postoperative care. Once the procedure begins, they must monitor the patients’ vital signs, pass instruments to the surgeons and operate surgical equipment. They also take the responsibility for post-surgical care. Post-surgical care involves administering medications, taking vitals and educating the patient about post-operative care.

Track 4: Types of Surgical Nurse

There are two main types of surgical nurse in the operation theatre; a scrub nurse and a circulation nurse. The role of scrub nurse is that she must be well educated and familiar with each operational equipments and required to provide the surgeons with the equipments as per needed. The scrub nurse is also responsible for making sure all operating equipments is well accounted for before and after the operation.

A circulation nurse has almost the same responsibilities as that of scrub nurse, but they are mainly involved in the cleanliness and non-contamination of the operation theatre. Their work is to keep the operating room as well as the surgical equipments clean and sterilized.

Surgical infection also known as surgical site infection is a type of healthcare-associated infection in which a wound infection occurs after a surgery. Surgical infection may have pus draining from them, can be red, painful or hot to touch. Other types of infections that mainly affect a surgical patient are post-operative respiratory and urinary tract infection, bacteraemias and antibiotic-related diarrhoeas. About 5% patients undergoing a surgery develop a surgical infection.

Track 7: Pediatric Surgery

Pediatric Surgery is a sub-group of surgery which involve the surgery of fetuses, infants, children and young adults. It is the only surgical specialty that is defined by patient’s age rather by a specific condition. Track 9: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Plastic Surgery has two main components: (i)Reconstructive Plastic Surgery-it restores the function and appearance of the human body after illness or accident. (ii) Aesthetic/Cosmetic plastic Surgery-it is mainly used to change the appearance. Reconstructive procedures are the bases of nearly all plastic surgeon work. Track 11: Pre and Post-Operative Surgery

Surgical Oncology is the branch of surgery applied to oncology. It works on management of tumors, especially cancerous tumors. It involves treating, managing and preventing various types of cancers.

Surgical nurses are the largest group of practicing professionals. It is one of the most demanding nursing specialties. In 2012, 59.5% of the hospitals indicated a vacancy rate of “less than 5%”. This rightward shift, along with the RN Recruitment Difficulty Index, is a clear indication that the RN labor shortage has returned and is intensifying. The vacancy rate of “Greater than 12.5%” saw the greatest increase to 18.8% of the respondents. Of significant concern is that a third (32.9%) of all hospitals have a RN vacancy rate higher than 10%. This is up from 4.8% in 2012. As the economy improves, as RNs no longer delay retirement, as RNs reconsider travel nursing, as part time RNs take less shifts and as the demand for RNs increase expect the vacancy rate to further deteriorate. When the labor market tightens, hospitals have historically sought to bridge the gap by utilizing overtime, surgical nurses, agency staff and travel nurses. All of which are costly strategies and can lead to issues with quality, safety, physician satisfaction, employee satisfaction and the patient experience.
